Funeral ministry opportunities at Saint Matthew’s Parish Community

Download this article as a PDF file: Funeral ministry of Saint Matthew

When someone in our family, or a close friend, dies, the entire experience is all-encompassing. It is impossible to compartmentalize all the feelings that we have around all that is involved.

Likewise for our parish community: we do not compartmentalize our compassion for the family. We are people of compassion regardless of what role we may play in our ministry to the grieving family.

This is true whether we are one of the people

  • Who takes the call from the family, or
  • Who takes all the necessary information, or
  • Who makes the calls to ensure there are sacristans and lunch servers, or
  • Who meets with the family to plan the funeral itself, or
  • Who sets up the physical space and opens the doors, or
  • Who is the sacristan for the funeral, or
  • Who plays the keyboard or leads the music as a cantor, or
  • Who is on the lunch serving team, or
  • Who accompanies the family to the cemetery, or
  • Who visits the family after the day of the funeral.

How do these ministries happen?  They happen because we—male and female, young and old—are willing to be present and assist.

Are you currently providing one or more of these ministries?  Would you like to become part of this important ministry at St. Matt’s?

Please join us for a Funeral Ministry Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, in the Social Hall at 6:45.  Father Steve will offer some reflections on this ministry.  This dinner is sponsored by the parish Rosary Society (which provides all the supplies for funeral lunches).
